Shanesha Taylor was arrested on March 20th by the Scottsdale Police for leaving her children ages 2 and 6 months in her car while she interviewed for a job. Ms. Taylor was homeless and could not access any child care. Her desperation to provide for herself and her children and her lack of options led her to take drastic measures in search of employment. Ms. Taylor needs support & help rather than incarceration and a criminal record that will surely decrease her chances to provide for her children in the future. We ask that Maricopa County use common-sense and provide support for Ms. Taylor and her children rather than punishment.
Shanesha Taylor is still in jail pending a $9,000 bond.

On Tuesday, local Arizonians delivered this petition with your signatures to County Attorney Bill Montgomery asking that he drop the charges against Shanesha Taylor.
Today, Bill Montgomery announced that he would prosecute Ms. Taylor on felony charges.
The following article describes the situation: http://www.azcentral.com/story/news/local/scottsdale/2014/04/16/county-attorney-says-will-prosecute-shanesha-taylor-felonies/7799987/
County Attorney Montgomery had this to say about those who signed this petition:
"First, they weren’t signatures; they were just a list of names," Montgomery said, referring to a printout from the website. "So I don’t know whether any of the individuals in their pajamas who logged on to the site and put their name on there really had a clue of all the circumstances involved in this particular case.
"The ‘quote-unquote’ letter addressed to me didn’t mention any of the circumstances that presented those children with jeopardy."
He continued: “And a quick review of the pages themselves, there are roughly 30 signatures, or 30 names, listed on each page, and in some of these instances, we had to go 10 pages before we found someone who lived in Arizona, let alone in Maricopa County.”
He seems to want to hear from Arizonians about how they feel about his decision. If you live in Arizona & would like to express your thoughts to Mr. Montgomery politely, please do give his office a call (602) 506-3411 to ask that he drop the charges against Shanesha.
Thank you for your concern for Shanesha and for your commitment to actual justice which would be to NOT prosecute her.”
The email was sent to those who signed the petition online.
Oh my god this is making me so angry right now, what a fucking bullshit thing to say.
I hope people fucking flood that phone line.
Actually, it was out of state activism that largely pushed prop 8 through. This was one of the huge arguments against it, and it really should be state officials’ jobs to make sure they are speaking for their own state not the others.
The well being of the children is also relevant. If an unemployed mother puts her kids in the hospital, it’s probably in their own best interest to be relocated. That is a different scenario than just leaving the windows up and not having any real problems.
This guy is just doing his job, and while he could have put it better, these are both things he should be looking into.
Adding: nothing in the above should be taken as support of this mess. I fully agree that this is racist BS and unfair.
